Sofala is a research and advisory firm working across Africa's high-growth markets. We help investors, corporates, development institutions and governments make decisions grounded in evidence, not headline data.
About Sofala Partners
Our Story
Sofala was the port that connected East Africa to the Middle East and Asia for five centuries, the largest of the trading centres on the Swahili coast. We took the name because the idea behind it still holds: Africa has long rewarded those who understand how it really works, not just those who move fastest.
We were founded in 2016 on a simple observation. Good decisions in African markets need more than desk research. They need field research and an honest read of context. That has not changed.
Founded on a simple premise
Sofala Partners was started in 2016 on the view that good decisions in African markets need more than desk research. They need direct fieldwork and an honest read of context, which isn’t assumption dressed up as insight. That premise still shapes how we work, research paired with direct relationships in the markets we cover, so our analysis reflects how things function beyond what appears on paper.
Named after a legacy of enterprise
Our name comes from the port of Sofala, the gateway between East Africa and the wider world for five centuries. We took it because the belief behind it still holds: Africa has long rewarded those who understand how it works, not just those who arrive with capital.
Who we work with
Our clients include investors weighing opportunity against risk, corporates entering or expanding across African markets, development finance institutions and donors designing programmes, and governments seeking independent analysis. What connects them is a need for advice they can rely on, free from the conflicts of interest that come with selling capital or products alongside advisory work.
Since 2016, we have completed over 100 projects across more than 40 markets, spanning agriculture, energy, finance, mining, health and technology.
We answer only to our clients. Our teams pair regional depth with sector specialisation, and because our networks are built over years, we can test what is happening against what is written down.
